Quasqueton, Iowa — Lowell and Agnes Walter once sought refuge from the busy streets of Des Moines at their riverside retreat, a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright known as Cedar Rock. This iconic estate, nestled along the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, served as the Walters’ sanctuary from 1950 until 1981. Today, Cedar Rock remains a remarkable architectural and cultural landmark under the care of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Visitors planning to tour the site during the 2025 season should prepare for temporary access changes due to scheduled infrastructure improvements on Quasqueton Diagonal Boulevard, the primary route to the park.
This summer, Quasqueton Diagonal Boulevard will undergo comprehensive repaving along with a bridge replacement project, which will affect site accessibility during the peak summer months. Tours of the Walter Estate will run as planned from May 21 through October 12, operating Wednesday through Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. However, a brief closure is expected in July while work progresses near the entrance gates to Cedar Rock.
During the roadwork period, all guests will be required to enter the park from the City of Quasqueton. Visitors are strongly encouraged to call ahead for reservations, as tour schedules may vary due to construction. Inquiries and reservations can be made by emailing cedar_rock@dnr.iowa.gov or calling 319-934-3572.
Despite the temporary disruption, Cedar Rock remains committed to welcoming guests and celebrating its storied past through a variety of events and educational experiences. The 2025 season will include:
May 21: Opening Day
June 7: Strawberry Moon Evening Event | 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
October 11: Afternoon with Frank Lloyd Wright | Lecture Symposium (off-site)
October 12: Final Day of Tours
In addition to these marquee events, Cedar Rock will host a series of evening tours, yoga sessions, and concerts throughout September. For the latest updates and a full event schedule, please visit www.friendsofcedarrock.org or follow the Friends of Cedar Rock on Facebook.
